We have expertise in representing women accused of murder and manslaughter.
We understand that female defendants can be victims as well as potential offenders. Many women commit murder and manslaughter as a result of domestic abuse and coercive control.
We appreciate that many women who have suffered abuse do not realise that they are victims because it takes place in the intimacy of the home, and sometimes our clients are embarrassed to talk about the abuse they have suffered because they have hidden it from their family and friends.
Often women going through the criminal justice system feel unheard and pressurised to give an account when they are distressed and before they are ready.
We take the time to get to know our clients and to understand their story. We consider if potential defences are available to our clients, for example, self-defence, lack of intent, diminished responsibility, and loss of control.
We instruct specialist psychiatrists and psychologists who recognise the impact of abuse on female defendants who have killed. We carefully prepare our cases in close collaboration with a team of barristers who have expertise in representing women in this area of law.
Together with our client, and with the assistance of medical and legal experts, we develop the defence and assess how to present each woman's case most effectively to the jury.
